Overexposure to asbestos is the most important factor which is responsible for contracting mesothelioma.  Of all the reported mesothelioma cases, about 70-80 percent has a record of asbestos exposure.  At the same time, some other cases have been reported where asbestos wasn’t at involved.  Asbestos is a mineral happening in nature as tons of flexible fibers and it can be separated into fine threads and woven.  It is widely put to industrial use for producing cement, flooring products, brake linings, roof shingles, insulation products and textiles.  Due to its widespread use, a number of employees have been affected by asbestos mesothelioma.

During the manufacturing process, the tiny asbestos particles get scattered in the air.  Unwittingly, the workers inhale or swallow these particles giving rise so severe health problems.  It is found that asbestos exposure and smoking enhance the risk of contracting cancer of the air passageways in the lung.  Many American workers have become hapless victims of the material since the early 1940s.  They include shipyard workers, people who are working in asbestos mines and mills, construction industries etc.

As the exposure to asbestos increases, the risk of asbestos related diseases also increases.  Since the late 1800s, asbestos has been mined and put to commercial purposes.  In the beginning, people were not aware about the risks involved in asbestos.  Once the connection between asbestos mesothelioma and asbestos was discovered, many welfare measures and laws in this regard came into existence.  Now there is a limit set for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the factories.

The malicious particles have not even spared the family members and others living with asbestos workers. These people become the hapless victims of asbestos particles brought home by the workers on the clothing and hair. Now the welfare measures adopted for the workers include bathing and change of dress at the work place.

Diagnosis of asbestos mesothelioma is very difficult as the indicators of the illness appear awfully late.  The similarity of the symptoms with those of other illnesses also prove and difficulty in the trail of early diagnosis.  Improvement in medical science has given rise to several treatment possibilities for the victims, though a complete cure is not materialized so far.
