While it may sound like something out of a bad sci-fi movie, it has become our reality. US doctors, in accordance with WHO regulations, have drafted a document deciding who will live and who will be allowed to die when the Swine Flu Pandemic strikes North America.

Once Swine Flu has us in its death grip, medical care -- including everything from vaccines to respirators to doctors and nurses themselves -- will become scarce. So a task force of members from prestigious universities, medical groups, and government agencies (the Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and World Health Organization) has compiled a list of people who would not be treated.

Those of us most affected by this decision can easily see this as an attempt to "play God" on the part of these doctors who so willingly ignore their Hippocratic oaths, but Dr. Asha Devereaux, a critical care specialist and lead writer of the task force report, called the guidelines a "blueprint for hospitals so that everybody will be thinking in the same way.”

This prestigious group recommends that every hospital in the U.S. choose a triage team to decide who will get lifesaving treatment and who will not, but the guidelines already spells out those who will be denied care. They include:

1. People older than 85.
2. People with severe trauma, such as critical injuries from car crashes  and shootings.
3. Severely burned people over 60.
4. People with severe mental impairment, such as moderate to advanced Alzheimer's disease.
5. People with severe chronic diseases, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or uncontrolled diabetes.
6. Others who are at a high risk of death or have a slight chance of long-term survival would also be unlikely to receive medical care.

The guidelines will clearly violate laws against age and disability discrimination, according to public health law expert Lawrence Gostin of Georgetown University. Gostin also declared the report "a political and legal minefield.”

Though most experts acknowledge that health care, in fact, shouldbe rationed once Swine Flu infections begin, the current list will basically single out the poor blacks, Mexicans, homosexuals, non-English-speaking peoples and any others who are generally considered as undesirables in America. Because in addition to this list, the triage team will, willy-nilly, decide on millions of others who will be arbitrarily denied medical treatment.

As for when the guidelines will be enforced, the task force says it could be any time now. Phase 5 Pandemic Alert says that a pandemic with millions infected, dead, and dying is imminent. It WILL happen!

As stated by Secretary Michael O. Leavitt, of the Dept. of Health and Human Services:

"Forty million people died when the last influenza pandemic swept around the world in 1918. The world has seen two less-severe pandemics since that time. We will definitely see another sometime in the future.”

We don't know the when, and we don't know how bad it will be. But we know it will happen sooner or later and that what we do now will save lives in the future.”

How is this possible? How did we get to the point where we allowed an engineered virus to be released onto a trusting population - then in the face of imminent death - we are being told that our job is to die.

Acting Surgeon General Rear Admiral Steven. Galson, M.D. explains that a Phase 5 Pandemic Alert in reference to the Swine Flu pandemic is really just an administrative classification that allows federal, state and local level emergency workers to communicate with each other concerning this 'new' disease.

In explaining this he is very careful to reiterate that this does not have any direct effect on the number of cases of Swine Flu that have been reported nor the severity of the disease in those affected.

My first question after hearing him is, "Exactly who is this man working for?”

If he, as the Surgeon General of the United States, is not working for the American people…so then, exactly who is he working for?

The deliberate attempt to make light of the number of people inflicted, dead and dying from this disease strikes me as heartless and uncaring. Yet he seems preoccupied with downplaying the severity of this disease and playing up his obligation to doctors, hospitals and other health care workers. Now, this is not necessarily a bad thing, but is it what we need at this time of a pandemic alert when our families are in direct danger.

We, the public, expect some information from him on the very things he doesn't have time to give us…namely, how many infected, how bad this disease is in America right now and what, if any, further precautions we should take.

According to the esteemed World Health Organization (WHO);

A Phase 5 Pandemic Alert means widespread human-to-human infection.

A Phase 5 Pandemic Alert means a pandemic is IMMINENT!

Phase 5 Pandemic Alert means that the time is short!

Every single one of these recommendations by WHO tell us that if you are not now in an affected area, you soon will be. No ifs, ands nor buts.

These are the points our Surgeon General should have reiterated instead of clarifying Phase Five Pandemic Alert as just an administrative classification used by bean-counters to keep their records straight.

Next is Phase 6 Pandemic Alert. By the time we receive this warning, it will already be too late. Phase Six, when it hits, will mean that a global pandemic is already underway and millions are infected, dead, and dying.

So obviously it is every man for himself because it appears that your Surgeon General isn't concerned whether you live or die.
